Reha Muhtar or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The News
December 29, 2008 by plisken

In today’s globalized world, we now have the acces to almost every single event by any means necessary. Or we just think that we are capable of having the truth. Nowadays, media offers us to see the news but they also tell us how to look upon it. There is also our main subject, the tabloidization of media which is a major problem in the daily lives of us, the so-called “qualified viewers”. We now came to a point where we cant seperate human interest subjects and political or international news in media corporates. In Turkey, we simply had our transmssion to private channels in 1990, which can be considered late comparing to USA and EU Countries and through this monopolitical tv system Turkish people only had the opportunity to see the only one side of the story from the eyes of a strict gouvernement television. From 1990, we have a bunch of private channel networks, but in the end they all have the same problem since they all are the products of the same system. Turkey has a deep military coup history and these periods also changed the entire tv system in news. The freedom of expression has damaged. Instead we have more low level “televole” news which focuses on celebrities life and sports instead of politics. Sure, there a few numbers of channels who has a bit more serious broadcasting mentality but the problem itself is beyond their abilities. So as I said, the news have the misison to depoliticize it’s viewers and so far they seem to accomplish their missions.
As for me, I still try to reach for the most reliable news source, but in the end I keep on watching our channels for the sake of old anchorman and a real comedian “Reha Muhtar”!

It is interesting how despite your desire to watch something serious you are still drawn to Reha Muhtar! Why do you think that is?
Heheh, I think he is an unexplainable phenomena that will always be a mystery for us!
