The film is based on the surroundings of a family which has some deep issues about their relationship with each other. The family consists of an overworked mother named Sherly, her brother, Frank, her husband Richard and his father Edwin and of course the two kids.
The family is actually a nuclear family but since his attempted suicide, Frank is temporarily living with her sister. In addition to this, there is also another relative, Edwin whose recently kicked out from a retirement home due to taking heroine. The house has a chaotic athmosphere and the family members are completely isolated from each other. Everyone seems to be headed in different directions and their relations are limited. There are marginal family figures such as a foulmouthed grandpa who use drugs and the gay uncle who tries to end his life. The father figure in the film Richard, has a failing career as a motivational speaker and he takes out his disappointmnets from the other members of the family. The mother however, is the secret figure of authority and she tries to do her best for keeping things peaceful under their roof. Sheryl’s son from a previous marriage Dwayne, is a teenager who has taken a vow of silence until he can accomplish his dream of becoming a test pilot. He doesn’t care about the things going around the house but he has a close relationship with his step sister Olive who’s seven years old and tries to go to a beauty contest in California.
The plot is based on the challange to go all the way to California for Olive who wants to participate to a contest called “Little Miss Sunshine”. During their trip, the family has plenty of conflicts but they always find a way to smooth things up.
The idea of marriage was a little blur for the audience but there isn’t a close relation between them. The financial problems of Richard spoil their relations and everytime they try to have a conversationi they ended up fighting. The idea here is that, two people sharing a household but having a distant relation due to various reasons.
The family has a significant role in the movie because during their never ending road trip, they ended up, getting to learn about each other’s feelings and that was a big step for their reconcile.
The family has plenty of conflicts with each other. For example, Richard always picks on his stepson, Dwayne, accusing him of being an odd teenager. He also criticize Frank and claiming that he is quitter for the reason that he tried to commit suicide. Also Richard’s failing career is always at the center of the problems that he have with his wife, Sheryl. In fact all these problems are present during the entire movie. But at the end of the movie they all tried to put aside their differences just to get along with each other. These conflicts generally affects Olive, the 7 year old daughter, who is very sensitive for these problems.
There isn’t a divorce in the family.

So does the film seem to suggest that families will always be subject to conflicts but we need to learn to communicate about these and in the end tolerate these conflicts, or maybe learn to handle and respond to these problems?
